Event Results and Upcoming Championships

(Winnipeg, MB Thursday, August 8th / 13) – The month July and early August continued to showcase Manitoba’s and Northwest Ontario’s finest players and courses.

The Women’s Amateur and the Men’s Mid-Amateur took place July 8th to 10th at the Minnewasta Golf Club in Morden.  Defending Champion Bri-ann Tokariwski of the Elmhurst G&CC shot a final round 82 to post a three day total of +17 (239) to repeat as the Provincial Women’s Amateur Champion. She beat Glendale’s Jenna Roadley, 2012 Runner Up, by one shot. Mindy Lichtman of St Boniface and Breanne Fredette of Southwood tied for third place with a three day total of 244.

Lichtman defeated Fredette in a playoff to earn the final spot on Team Manitoba with Tokariwski and Roadley.

In the Men’s Mid-Amateur, Selkirk G&CC’s Ben Bandura won his second Provincial Mid-Amateur (25+) and Mid-Masters (40+) titles by firing a final round 66 (-6). Bandura finished the tournament with a three day total of -2 (214), four shots better than runner-up Matt Gray of St Charles and five shots better than third place finishers Jesse Skelton and Garth Collings, both from Breezy Bend.

The Provincial Mid-Amateur Team will be Bandura, Skelton and Collings.

The Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship took place July 22nd to 25th at the Neepawa Golf & Country Club.  St Charles Country Club’s Derek East captured Championship in style by leading wire to wire for a 72 hole total of 275 (-13). His four rounds of 68-68-68-71 were six shots better than runner up Aaron Cockerill of The Teulon Golf & Country Club who finished the tournament at -7 (281).

East and Cockerill will be joined by third place finisher Charlie Boyechko of Southwood to compete as Team Manitoba

The month of July concluded with the Men’s & Women’s Senior Championship July 29th to 31st at the Breezy Bend Country Club.  Rhonda Orr of the Southwood G&CC captured her first Women’s Senior Championship with three rounds of 80, 83 & 82 (245).  She was six shots better than runner up Maria Funston of the Blumberg Birdie Girls who shot rounds of 83, 84 & 84 for a three day total of 251.

Joining Orr and Funston on Team Manitoba will be 2009, 2011 & 2012 Women’s Senior Champion Tammy Gibson of the St Boniface GC.

On the men’s side, Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame honored member Garth Collings captured another provincial title at his home course by winning the Men’s Senior Championship.  Collings fired a three day total at the Breezy Bend Country Club of 214 (68, 75, 70) to win by a stunning 19 shots.  St Charles CC’s Brent Armstrong and Vic Herak of the Hudson Hills GC in New York were runners up with a three day total of 233.

Collings and Armstrong will be joined by Bill Moslenko of the Golf Manitoba Public Player Club as Team Manitoba.

July 23rd to 26th saw Team Manitoba finish in eighth position in the team competition of the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur at the Club de golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Quebec.

The following week both the national men’s and women’s junior championships were conducted.  The junior girls finished in eighth spot at the Cherry Downs G&CC in Pickering ON and the junior boys finished 7th at the Timberwolf GC in Garson ON.  On the boy’s side, Travis Fredborg of Selkirk (T60th) and David Nelson of Southwood (T70th) both made the cut.

The Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship is being contested this week and Team Manitoba finished third in the Willingdon Cup team competition.  Tuelon’s Aaron Cockerill leads the Manitoba contingent with a +1 (73 & 70) after 36 holes of play.

Later this week, Team Manitoba’s boys and girls head to Sherbrooke, QB for the Canada Summer Games.

Provincially, Interclub A (for women with handicap factors of 24.0 and less) just concluded and the team from the Breezy Bend Country Club were the Low Net Winners and the team from the Elmhurst G&CC won the Low Gross Division.

Upcoming Interclub events include the Interclub B (handicap factor requirement of 24.1 and higher), Senior Interclub, Junior Interclub, and the Provincial Interclub for men in early September.

Today is round one of the Junior Bantam Championship at River Oaks Golf Course for competitor’s 14yrs and younger and the Rural Championship gets under way next week, August 11th & 12th.
