Major Events Underway and Provincial Champions Being Crowned

(Winnipeg, MB - Friday, July 7th / 17) – The month of June and early July have seen some amazing competitive play at some of Manitoba’s finest golf courses.

The Women’s Amateur and Men’s Mid-Amateur Championships took place at the Bel Acres Golf & Country Club July 3rd to 5th.  In the Women’s Amateur, Marissa Naylor of the Pine Ridge Golf Club emerged as the champion with a 54-hole total of 233 (+14). Naylor defeated Charmaine Mackid of the Breezy Bend Country Club in a three-hole playoff to capture the title.  Naylor, Mackid and Elmhurst Golf & Country Club’s Bri-ann Tokariwski, will represent Manitoba at the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship July 25th to 28th at Cutten Fields in Guelph, Ontario.

Todd Fanning of the Niakwa Country Club won the Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship (25+) with a three-round total of 219 (+3).  A playoff was also required to determine the Champion with Fanning defeating Mike Tibbs of the Pine Ridge Golf Club on the first playoff hole.  Fanning and Tibbs will be joined by Breezy Bend Country Club’s Justin McDonald and compete as Team Manitoba at the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship August 22nd to 25th at the Wascana CC in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The Men’s Mid-Masters Championship (40+) is contested during this event with Todd Fanning also winning that title.

The Women’s City & District Championship was contested on June 24th and 25th at the Larters @ St Andrews Golf & Country Club with Elmhurst G&CC’s Bri-ann Tokariwski defending her 2016 title as the champion after 36 holes.  She was victorious by three strokes over Rebecca Kuik of the Niakwa Country Club.  This is Tokariwski’s third City & District Championship win.

The Women’s Alternate Shot Championship benefiting Golf FORE the Cure took place June 19th at the Pine Ridge Golf Club.  Golf Fore the Cure is a nationally driven program through Golf Canada that raises funds for breast cancer research.  As a part of the Alternate Shot Championship, funds were collected through pledges, fees for entering holes contests and a 50/50 contest.  Golf Manitoba is a proud supporter of this event with funds raised going to the Canadian Cancer Society – Manitoba Branch.

The Gross Division Champions were Charmaine Mackid (Breezy Bend) and Kathryn McKenzie (Golf Manitoba Public Player Club) and the Net Division Champions were Carol Martel & Fran Rebeck both from the Transcona Golf Club.

July continues to be a busy month of provincial championships with the Men’s & Women’s Junior Championships taking place July 10th to 13th at the Rossmere Country Club.  Defending Men’s Champion Zach Wytinck will be in the field.  On the Women’s side, 2016 Champion Bobbi Uhl of the Shilo Country Club will also look to defend her title.

The Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship will take place July 17th to 20th at the Selkirk Golf & Country Club and the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club.  The field will play the first two rounds in Selkirk then will be cut to the low 60 and ties for the final two rounds at Elmhurst.  The 2015 & 2016 champion, Devon Schade of Elmhurst is set to defend his provincial crown.  Past Champions of the event include Todd Fanning (1984, ’90, ’91, ‘92 & 2014), Derek East (2013), Josh Wytinck (2012), Jesse Skelton (2011), Peter More (2010), Garth Collings (1987, 1994, 2009) and Brad Kirton (2007 & 2008).

The Men’s & Women’s Senior Championship will conclude the month of July at the St. Boniface Golf Club, July 24th to 26th.  Rhonda Orr of Southwood Golf & Country Club is set to defend her title as is 2016 Men’s Champion Mike Walker of the St Boniface Golf Club.
