Major Events Underway and Provincial Champions Being Crowned

(Winnipeg, MB Friday, July 8th / 16) – July continues to be a busy month of provincial championships with the Junior Men’s & Women’s Championships taking place July 10th to 13th at the Portage Golf Club and the Bel Acres Golf & Country Club.  Defending Men’s Champion Wesley Hoydalo of Selkirk will be in the field.  On the Women’s side, 2015 Champion Veronica Vetesnik is no longer junior age eligible so a new champion will be crowned.

The Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship will take place July 18th to 21st at the Minnewasta Golf & Country Club in Morden. The 120 player field will play the first two rounds then the field will be cut to the low 60 and ties for the final two rounds.  Last year’s champion, Devon Schade of Elmhurst is set to defend his provincial crown.  Past Champions of the event include Todd Fanning (1984, ’90, ’91, ‘92 & 2014), Derek East (2013), Josh Wytinck (2012), Jesse Skelton (2011), Peter More (2010), Garth Collings (2009, 1994, 1987) and Brad Kirton (2008 & 2007).

Two qualifying events recently took place for the Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship.  The first qualifier was at the Transcona GC on June 23rd and the second on June 25th at the Minnedosa Golf & Country Club.  Seventy seven spots were available for the event as 43 players accepted their exemptions.  Exemptions are granted to the top forty from the previous year’s Men’s Amateur Championship, previous years Manitoba Junior Team members, previous years Manitoba Mid - Amateur Team members, Champion and Runner - up from previous years Manitoba Rural Junior Championship, low 8 scores, including ties, from previous years Manitoba Rural Amateur Championship, Semi - Finalists in the current years Manitoba Match Play Championship, Low Medallist in the current years Manitoba Match Play Qualifying Rounds and the host clubs each receive two spots.

The Men’s & Women’s Senior Championship will conclude the month of July at the Glendale Golf & Country Club, July 25th to 27th.  Tammy Gibson of Maplewood & Niakwa is set to defend her title as is 2015 Men’s Champion Garth Collings of the Breezy Bend CC.

The month of June and early July have seen some amazing competitive play at some of Manitoba’s finest golf courses.

The Women’s Amateur and Men’s Mid-Amateur Championships took place at the Breezy Bend Country Club July 4th to 6th.  In the Women’s Amateur, Bri-ann Tokariwski of the Elmhurst G&CC emerged as the champion with a 54 hole total of 226 (+7). Tokariwski, Camryn Roadley (Glendale G&CC) and Jill Hardy (Niakwa CC) will represent Manitoba at the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship July 26th to 29th at the Ken-Wo Golf Club in New Minas, Nova Scotia.

Eric Johnson of the Breezy Bend Country Club won the Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship with a three round total of 216 (+1) which was good for a one shot victory over Bobby Wiebe also of the Breezy Bend Country Club.  Johnson, Ben Bandura (Elmhurst G&CC) and Brian Katchnoski (Elmhurst G&CC) will compete as Team Manitoba and the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship August 23rd to 26th at the Golf Chateau-Bromont in Bromont, Quebec.

The Women’s City & District Championship was contested on June 22nd and 23rd at the Transcona Golf Club with Elmhurst G&CC’s Bri-ann Tokariwski emerging as the champion after 36 holes.  She was victorious by four strokes over Hannah Diamond of the St Charles Country Club.  This is Tokariwski’s second City & District Championship win.
