Provincial Champions Crowned, Manitobans at Nationals and August Events
(Winnipeg, MB Tuesday August 2nd / 16) – The competitive schedule for the month of August will begin with the PowerSmart Manitoba Games taking place August 8th & 9th at the Steinbach Fly-In GC. This 36-hole event will see boys (15 & under) and girls (17 & under) from the different regions of the province compete in both a team and individual competition. Teams have been determined from training squads that have been working together since the spring to prepare for the event.
The Rural Championship will follow on August 13th & 14th at the Teulon G&CC. New in 2016, a women’s division has been added to the event. Players who are not members of a golf club in the City of Winnipeg are eligible to compete in this 36-hole event for the Junior, Amateur and Senior divisions.
The Junior Bantam Championship will then take place at the Assiniboine GC in Winnipeg August 17th & 18th. Junior players 14 & under will play 36 holes to determine both a Bantam Male and Female Champion. Past Champions on the boy’s side include Bailey Bjornson (2015), Ryan McMillan (2014), Zach Wytinck (2013), John Racciatti Jr. (2012), Brendan Kesterke (2011) & Travis Fredborg (2010). On the girl’s side, Reece Carter (2015), Bobbi Uhl (2014), Camryn Roadley (2012 & 2013), Brynn Todd (2011) and Stephanie Lasiuk (2010).
The remaining competitive events for the month of August are the Interclub Championships which have teams of four from participating clubs compete against other clubs. Team scores are calculated based on the best three scores of the four person teams. These events are:
Rhonda Orr of the Southwood Golf & Country Club won the Women’s Senior Championship title at the Glendale G&CC. Orr shot rounds of 76, 84 & 77 (237) to win by an impressive 22 strokes over Matty Leung, also from the Southwood G&CC. Orr and Leung will be joined by St Charles’ Gail Kennedy and compete as Team Manitoba in the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Club in Ponoka, AB August 24th to 26th.
Mike Walker of St Boniface captured his first provincial senior title by winning the Men’s Senior Championship at the Glendale G&CC. A three-day total of 219 (72, 72 & 75) resulted in a five stoke win over Garth Collins of the Breezy Bend CC. A playoff took place for the last team spot between third place finishers Brad Moore of Pine Ridge and Ken Warwick of Niakwa with Moore winning on the second hole. Walker, Collings and Moore will compete in the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship as Team Manitoba. The national championship will be held September 6th to 9th at the Grand Niagara Golf Club in Niagara Falls, ON.
Devon Schade successfully defended his men’s amateur championship at Minnewasta G&CC in Morden. Schade shot rounds of 73, 72, 68 & 69 for a four-day total of 282 (-6) to win the Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship by three strokes over fellow Elmhurst member Zach Sackett. Schade and Sackett will be joined by third place finisher Allan McDonald of the Breezy Bend CC to compete as Team Manitoba in the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship being held August 8th to 11th at The Royal Ottawa GC & Eagle Creek GC in Ottawa.
The Accurate Dorwin Junior Women’s Championship took place at the Portage GC & the Bel Acres G&CC July 11th to 13th. Bobbi Uhl of the Shilo CC won her first title with a three-day total of 233 (75, 78 & 80) for a 2 stroke victory over Glendale’s Camryn Roadley. Roadley, the 2015 Women’s Amateur Champion and Female Golfer of the Year, had a 54-hole total of 235 (76, 79 & 80). Team Manitoba will be made up of Uhl, Rebecca Kuik (Niakwa) and Marissa Naylor (Pine Ridge) and will compete at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship August 2nd to 5th at the Links at Penn Hills in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia.
Zach Wytinck won his first Accurate Dorwin Junior Men’s Championship with an impressive 10 stroke victory at the Portage Golf Club and the Bel Acres Golf & Country Club July 10th to 13th. Wytinck fired a four round total of 291 (71, 69, 75 & 76) to capture the title. St Charles’ Sam Diamond finished runner up with a four round total of 301 (70, 79, 77 & 75). Wytinck and Diamond will be joined by Quarry Oaks’ Stefan Lavalee and compete as Team Manitoba at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship August 1st to 4th at the Clovelly Golf Club in St John’s, Newfoundland.
On the national scene, at the Canadian Women’s Amateur, the Manitoba Team of Bri-ann Tokariwski, Camryn Roadley and Jill Hardy finished in 4th place in the Interprovincial Team Matches. Individually Roadley was the low Manitoba finishing in a tie for 42nd (15th lowest Canadian in the field) with 72-hole total of 295 (72, 71, 70 & 82). Tokariwski and Hardy both missed the cut.
